Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS)

All teachers working within the lifelong learning sector are now required to have a recognised teaching qualification. (The term ‘teacher’ includes any trainer, facilitator, tutor (etc), assessor or member of staff who delivers learning to one or more learners  - this can be in a classroom or at an employers’ premises and includes the running of group inductions.

Before starting to teach, or within 6 months of commencing a teaching career, a threshold licence to teach must be obtained.

Achievement of the Level 3 Award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) confers this threshold licence. The threshold licence to teach allows you to commence your professional development within the teaching profession.    It does not confer qualified teacher status (QTS) and you are expected to continue your own professional development to gain a suitable teaching qualification.

There are many awarding bodies for this qualification e.g. CIEH, Highfield, EDI, C&G, BTEC (Edexcel) and the regulatory body is the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA).

All trainers working within the further education arena should hold membership of the Institute for Learning (IfL), successful completion of the PTLLS qualification gives you the ability to apply for affiliate membership.
